Mexico: Tamaulipas expects to export 30,000 tons of Italian lemon

Tamaulipas expects to export to the United States more than 30,000 tons of Italian lemons within the 2015-2016 export period, thus surpassing the 28,000 tons achieved in the 2014-2015 period.

Humberto Ramirez Vazquez, deputy director of federal plant health, said that this process had begun with the registration of local packers dedicated to the delivery of this citrus to the US.

He said they expected to issue 1,700 international export certificates, just as in 2014.

The 28,000 tons exported in the previous period strengthened the presence of the Italian lemon produced in Tamaulipas in global markets, he said.

Fortunately, he added, the export rate continues to rise, allowing Tamaulipas to position itself as the main exporter of this product in the international market.

This product produced in the entity, he said, is of excellent quality and great value due to the importance it has on niche markets, to which exports are focused, mainly to the United States.

He said the economic flow generated by this business process strengthened the generation of new jobs in Tamaulipas, as well as the modernization of agricultural practices, and value added services that are required for the certification demanded by the food industry.

He also stated that the citrus that isn’t exported is destined to the national juicing industry for the extraction of essential oils, simple and concentrated juice. Additionally, the fruit’s skin is processed to obtain pectins for the food industry for export.
