The Bavarian Berleis apple
A new apple variety, a childhood dream
The Berleis apple is the childhood dream of apple lover Mathias Markl. The Bavarian apple cultivator started in 1998 with the first attempts to cultivate a new apple variety.
And ten years later Matthias Markl was successful, he could register the new cultivar “Berleis.” This apple is a cross of his two favourite varieties "Red Berlepsch" and "Red Eisern apple" and he has created an apple that combines a robust, old-fashioned taste with the modern requirements. This is quite a performance since modern apple cultivars usually are only created by professional institutes and companies.

The only one with a license for the Berleis apple and producer of the Berleis apple is Fruit Nursery Werner (Obst-Baumschule) from Bavaria. “Mathias Markl has licensed the apple because of the increased demand. Convinced of the potential of Berleis we started the production. The European license followed in 2010,” stated the nursery. “We distribute the Berleis exclusively in Bavaria. Our customers are mostly greengrocers with a wide range of apples.”

Started with a dream without economic motives, a robust exclusive cultivar has been created that enriches the apple range of every fruit lover. And this is not just the opinion of Mathias Markl and the Fruit Nursery Werner. In November 2013 the Berleis apple got the award for the “Apple of the year 2013” in the region Straubing-Bogen. A special honour for growers and producers.
