Canada: Summer results in high tomato consumption

“Consumption of our greenhouse vegetables is fantastic,” says Jimmy Coppola with Westmoreland Sales – TopLine Farms. “The summer definitely helps peak consumption with all the BBQ and outdoor events that people attend. These occasions result in increased produce consumption.”

Westmoreland-TopLine Farms grows, packs and distributes beefsteak tomatoes, cluster tomatoes, roma tomatoes as well as cherry, grape and cocktail tomatoes in many different colors. In addition to tomatoes, the company’s selection includes, but is not limited to seedless and mini seedless cucumbers, cocktail cucumbers, bell peppers, hot peppers, mini sweet peppers, long sweet peppers and baby eggplants.

Expanding into new markets
“We have a steady year-round supply of greenhouse grown vegetables,” said Coppola. “With our greenhouses and growing partners in Canada, the US, Mexico and Central America, we are able to supply our customers 365 days a year.” At the moment, Westmoreland-TopLine ships its product all across North America. “However, we are looking to increase our reach and in the near future, we will be including other markets,” mentioned Coppola.

Environmentally-friendly packaging
A development that Westmoreland-TopLine Farms is currently working on is environmentally friendly packaging which consists of all new paper trays that will be flow wrapped and are 100 percent recyclable. “This new top seal packaging allows us to use less plastics as the lid on a clamshell will be replaced by a top seal film. In addition, we are increasingly using bags instead of the typical clamshell packaging that has been used in the past. We feel this is a step in the right direction as far as eliminating packaging that is harmful to the environment.”
