Italy: Watermelon season at Geofur PO

OP Geofur, famous for its red chicory production and for the part played in the recent EcoOrt project, also specialises in other products such as watermelons, sugarloaf chicory, sauerkraut and Savoy cabbage. The harvesting of watermelons started on June 30th.

The PO, guided by Cristiana Furiani, opted for the Ostiglia area in the Mantua province to grow the produce. The first results are good, as the fruit "tastes nice and is sweet, so expectations are high, especially considering the hot temperatures lately." The campaign should continue to August 30th.

The company grows three watermelon varieties. Two round ones, Top Gun and Baraka, which range from 7 to 12 and 14 kg respectively, and an oblong one, Dumara, ranging from 8 to 15 kg.

Thanks to its 2 brushing/grading and pricing lines, the PO can meet all client demands, packing the produce in wooden bins or customised packaging.
