US (CA): Steady cauliflower market as season enters 'summer doldrums'

Prices for cauliflower have decreased over the last few weeks, though now they're steady. Decreased demand from eastern markets has contributed to a softer market as the season has settled into summer.

“The market for cauliflower was really good through the middle of June,” said Chris Reade of Produce West in Salinas. “But then the East Coast markets came into their local supplies, so demand there waned. The market has come down and prices hit the floor here last week.” On July 10, prices for a carton of white 9s were between $7.50 and $10.45 out of Salinas and Watsonville, and prices for a carton of white 9s out of Santa Maria were between $6.00 and $9.50.

Favorable weather brought on steady supplies during the last few weeks, and Reade thinks the season has settled into a stable place. While the market has been somewhat volatile this year, Reade doesn't think it will move dramatically in the coming weeks.

“We're getting into the summer doldrums, which is the sort of ho-hum part of the year,” said Reade. “We kind of hit bottom at the beginning of July, and I don't think there will be much change until we get into the fall months when we see declining volumes.”
