Italy: Brio organic produce 'conquers' Italian retailers

According to a recent Nielsen survey, organic products are not affected by the crisis and consumption has been increasing constantly even in the past few years characterised by the recession. Customers seem, in fact, to have increased by 14.8% to 3.2 million people.

In line with this general trend, the results achieved by
Brio, a leading company both in Italy and abroad in the organic food product sector, are very positive. In the first half of 2015, the company saw a 6.6% increase in turnover of fresh produce sales.

"We did particularly well with Italian retailers, as our production saw a 33% increase in value with respect to 2014," explains Tom Fusato, BRIO sales manager.

"It was an extraordinary result also thanks to the launch of the organic Alce Nero fresh produce range in the main retailer chains. Alce nero is an historical Italian company established in 1979 with which we have been working with since 2011."

"This project enabled us to increase the share of organic produce in supermarkets and hypermarkets as well as customer retention, as more and more customers have been 'conquered' by Alce Nero products."

"It is definitely a positive phenomenon, which we are trying to promote so the share of organic produce can reach the same levels as in France, Germany and England."

The good trend means good profitability for producers, who can in fact count on satisfactory payments.

"Kiwis did particularly well with 94 cents per kg on average for 65+ grades. Pears reached over €1/kg on average for Abata 65+, 98 cents for Conference, 93 cents for Kaiser and 76 cents for Williams. Prices of persimmons, apricots, strawberries and salad were also good, and not so bad for apples, peaches, nectarines, tomatoes, courgettes and cucumbers."

For what concerns subsidiaries, there was a 2% increase in turnover for Biologica 2006, which specialises in supplies for the catering sector in Central Italy and an 18% increase for Brio France SAS, which supplies French retailers.

"We are particularly satisfied with the "Cremoso" organic Hass avocado performance, which saw an increase in turnover and volumes - 200% in the last few months. Definitely an excellent result, although quantities are still limited and therefore comparable to those of a niche product. But we feel they will increase in the near future because this variety has great organoleptic qualities and is perfect for the Mediterranean diet."
