Larger areas for Munich wholesalers

New Munich market hall design chosen

In future traders will get larger sales areas in the new Munich wholesale market hall. The design of the market hall has been chosen. During a closed council assembly the members selected the design of Ackermann Architects, a studio in Munich. The council had 13 designs to choose from.

The idea is that the new wholesale market halls will be built in the Thalkirchner street east of the historical buildings. The old wholesales market won’t be demolished, but get another designation. The 40,000 square meters of the new market means that the traders will get the use of larger areas. And storage and sales areas will be on the same level.

The new building, 500 meters long, will have a ground floor of glass and a serrated roof structure. There isn’t a detailed timetable for the build yet.

The new build is important. In recent years the wholesale market has been operating at a loss. According to Boris Schwartz, market manager, it is only possible to turn this trend around with a new market hall. In 2014 the market had a deficit of 2.6 million Euro. And in 2015 the deficit will reach 3.2 million Euro. The reasons mentioned for the deficit are the continuous repairs to the old market halls and the plans for the new buildings.
