"Cold chain export shipments now unbroken"

Logistics export soon under one roof at Veiling BelOrta

The idea took some time to realize, but at the end of June, the moment was there: an agreement has been reached on the GAP BelOrta - Brucargo project. A Gateway Access Point is realized on site at BelOrta, in conjunction with various parties. Soon the first shipment will leave through the new full-in-house service. SB Consult was appointed by all parties to expand this service. Brucargo and BelOrta officially presented the project last week at the national airport in Zaventem.

Fresh Valley
60% of the products bought at BelOrta, are destined for export. "The main destinations are France, Germany, and the Netherlands, and then there are other buyers farther away. Sint-Katelijne-Waver is also known as Fresh Valley. Major exporters are located at and around the auction. These traders are soon able to reap the benefits provided by the new system."

Luc Peeters of BelOrta: "We're still working on the practical preparations, and we still need a few weeks to get the logistical concept operational. It's a full-house service, with all parties needed to ship the products together in one place. Now exporters still have to go to customs, the food agency and other parties separately. Those organizations aren't always nearby." The products are cooled and stored, inspected and readied for shipment at the auction. In addition, shipments from various shippers are combined and taken to the airport together. "It's a fast and sustainable solution. Waiting times are avoided, and food losses are limited because the cold chain remains unbroken." The new service was initially conceived for air freight, but other types of shipments can also be handled in the new BelOrta centre. "With a different transport, the only thing that changes is the documentation system where we can offer an additional service," Luc explains.

SB Consult

The partners that support this concept, come from both the public and private sector. These are POM Vlaams Brabant, POM Antwerpen, FPS Finances: Customs and Excises, FAVV and PCEs, Brucargo, Freshtrade Belgium and BelOrta. SB Consult was appointed by all parties to expand this service. SB Consult provides advice, mediation and organization of transport and logistics activities. They ready the orders for export, handling the phytosanitary formalities in conjunction with FAVV. They also take care of the required documents and certificates, and deal with customs-related formalities. "The advantage is that there's one point of contact for the logistical requirements of the exporters. In addition, the transit time is short. Everything takes place under one roof, and consolidated transport to Brucargo is handled."
