Heavy rainfall in Costa Rica, low production

Pineapple market: from surplus to shortage

The last two weeks have been difficult for the pineapple market. A boat from Costa Rica that was delayed caused two shipments to arrive at the same time, which certainly was not ideal. However, it appears that the tide will soon turn, "Heavy rainfall in Costa Rica has caused a great deal of damage. Roads to the harbour have been destroyed. This will ensure a sharp decrease in supply," says Mario de Goede from Coolfresh International.

"Apart from the bad weather, low production in the coming weeks will ensure low import volumes. Last year less pineapples were planted because of the bad weather. Starting with the first arrival Friday, there will be less pineapples and that will continue over the next few weeks. They are saying that in two to three weeks the price will be 9-10 Euro, while in the past few weeks the price had fallen to 5 Euro. You can see that a lot can happen in just a few weeks. We went from a surplus to a shortage."
