US: Summer fruit puts pressure on bananas

Though demand for bananas wasn't as affected by competition from summer fruit last year, this year's banana sales have been. While bananas are available year-round, demand during the summer is dependent on the volume of available competing fruit.

“The last two years we haven't seen a decrease in demand for bananas due to summer fruit,” said Mayra Velazquez de Leon of Organics Unlimited. “That's been unusual, but this year we are starting to feel the effects of summer fruit. It all depends on the volume that they have, otherwise consumers always turn to bananas that are available year-round.”

As is normal for stable commodities like bananas, prices have been steady. Organics Unlimited handles only organic bananas from Mexico and Ecuador, but they can also accommodate requests for conventional fruit. Their main market is the western part of the United States, though they also do spot sales in the eastern half of the country and export to Canada and Japan, and all combined they ship about 30 loads per week.
