Quebec : Massive investments in greenhouse sector

Investments in the greenhouse sector have been mounting up in the last few months with Serres Royales, for example, investing $15 million, Serres Sagami $5 million and Serres Tundra $100 million.

Last week the Quebec government announced a $25 million aid through Investissement Québec for Serres Tundra. It is a $23 million loan guarantee and a credit line guarantee of $2 million. The project developers, Eric Dubé, Caroline and Bertrand Fradet intend to invest $100 million into the construction of 40 hectares of hydroponic greenhouses in Saint-Félicien. The developers hope to start producing cucumbers as of September 2016.

President of the Greenhouse producing syndicate in Quebec, André Mousseau, explains that producers are investing because there is a demand, “currently, the Quebec market is invaded by all sorts of products that come from outside, from Ontario and Mexico. The Quebecer producers are trying to give themselves the means to fulfil the demand”.
