Italy: Celebrating Solinda's tenth birthday

The Solinda mini-watermelon brand celebrated its 10th birthday in early June 2015.

The first commercial tests were carried out by Peviani 15 years ago yet Solinda still has a great advantage on similar varieties both seedless and with seeds.

"We can say that because we regularly test what is available on the market. We test new varieties every year so we are fully aware of the potential around. Solinda has proved to be very reliable."

Solinda's 2015 season
Gino Peviani told FreshPlaza that "this year, we started very well as sale volumes increased by 65% in the first 8 weeks. Sales abroad grew by 35% and domestic ones doubled."

Prices were similar to the previous season, and were higher abroad.

Solinda's 2015 production started in Almeria with harvests between late April and early June. Then Italy started harvesting in Sicily, Apulia and Basilicata.

Harvesting.

"Volumes harvested have peaked and we will carry on this way until mid August. Then the campaign will end in mid-September."

Sorting is in fact very accurate, only the produce complying with strict regulations is sold under the Solinda brand. Fruit must have a perfect shape and be shiny and uniform. All fruits are graded electrically. Other characteristics are its crunchiness, long shelf-life and the colour of the flesh.

"Solinda is without doubt the best product in its category and sales have also been managed well. Some foreign chains have adopted it as their reference product with record results."

"Cultivated areas of mini watermelons increased a lot in the past 5 years. The preference goes to varieties that produce a lot, have seeds and cost less. Big grades are constantly decreasing. We learned how to produce well and manage a competitive produce with an excellent price/quality ratio."

"We really believe in this product nonetheless, we are always thinking of how we can improve. The only thing we fear is bad weather - July 2014 is still fresh in our minds."
