Italy: Lemon market stabilising after sharp rise in prices

After various weeks of high prices, the wholesale price of lemons is finally stabilising. "Prices are high this year because demand was good and there was a gap in production, especially in Spain, which is the country that usually dictates market prices. Consumption halted when prices increased in the past month," explains Andrea Saturnini, wholesaler from Sa.Ga. in Verona.

"The Italian lemon season has now ended. Some Sicilian lemons were being sold in Verona yesterday at €1.40/kg and in Syracuse at 60-75 cents (Primofiore and Verdello varieties respectively), a sign that there is only little Italian produce left on the market."

"The Spanish Verna variety campaign is also ending and prices have dropped a little. The extra category was being sold at €1.50-1.60/kg lately and the standard category reached €1.00-1.10/kg. The season will continue for another 7/15 days."

"Produce from the southern hemisphere - Argentina and South Africa - is now available, but prices are high. At the beginning, import prices would have made us sell at €2/kg, but luckily they have dropped to €1.70/kg for high-quality Argentinian produce."

"You need to add 10 cents more per kg for South African lemons because their quality is better."

"Prices are stabilising now, but it is difficult to talk about expectations for the next few weeks. Everything can happen when the Spanish campaign is over."
