BLE market report KW 25/15

Latin American pear availability down, German cauliflower widely available

Pears
The supply of Packham`s Triumph and Forelle from South Africa and Chile decreased. Argentina only occasionally supplied the market with Abate Fetel, this variety is repackaged in 5-kg boxes in Italy. The pear variety Conference from the Netherlands and Belgium completed the range on offer. With the demand-oriented supply, prices remained fairly stable with only marginal up and downward fluctuations. Pears with easily damaged flesh, for example the Forelle from South Africa in Hamburg, had to be sold with significant price reductions. The Italian summer pears, Bella di Giugno, completed the range, and sold in Frankfurt for 2.20 to 2.40 Euro per kg.

Cauliflower
The market could almost exclusively be supplied with German cauliflowers. Only in Cologne Belgian cauliflowers completed the range. The low demand caused the prices to decrease slightly in the beginning. During the week the price remained at this reduced level. Only in Cologne prices fluctuated daily.

Apples
New Zealand dominated the trade; however import from overseas was decreased and that had a stabilizing effect on the price.

Table grapes
The Italian supply of grapes convinced in terms of quality; yet due to the increased availability the prices had to be reduced.

Strawberries
The supply of the German strawberries decreased. At the same time the demand decreased due to the bad weather.

Apricots
The assortment of apricots was varied in terms of supplied quantities and the number of varieties on offer. With the extensive supply, price reductions could not always be avoided.

Cherries
While the availability of the Spanish cherries came to a stand still, the Turkish import noticeably increased. The cold weather had a negative impact on the customers’ interest in cherries.

Peaches and nectarines
Overall increased supplies reached the market. In general, the demand for the abundant supply was too low, so that the estimated prices could not be met.

Kiwis
New Zealand dominated the trade; the supply usually has been sufficient to cope with the reduced storage possibilities.

Lemons
The trade is still dominated by Spain. However, the presence of imported Argentine lemons slowly increased.

Bananas
The supply was demand based therefore prices barely fluctuated.

Lettuce
Iceberg lettuces mostly came from Germany and Belgium. With a normal availability the demand remained constant. Coloured lettuce varieties sold steadily.

Cucumbers
German products clearly dominated the cucumbers sales. The supply grew and greatly exceeded the demand.

Tomatoes
Dutch and Belgian supply was generally at the same level. Meanwhile, the supply of German tomatoes gradually increased.

Sweet peppers
Sales clearly dominated by Dutch sweet peppers. Primarily the supply influenced the price development, which highly differentiated.

Asparagus
This year's season is coming to an end. Due to the end of the harvest the German supply of the white and violet varieties are substantially limited.

Onions
The supply of onions increased somewhat; the Spanish import increased what immediately led to price reductions.
