Honduras: Producer killed for his bananas

In order to steal the banana production he was about to cut in his plot, a partner of the Subirana Cooperative was gunned down in the community of Echeverry of Santa Rita, Yoro.

On the afternoon of Monday, June 22, 53 year old Manuel Paz arrived at his property, as every day, to clean and check if some outlaws had jumped the fence to steal his fruit; something that had happened in the past.

After a few hours the farmer took his bicycle to return home, but several intruders that were hidden in the bushes a few meters away, ambushed him and shot him repeatedly.

The family of Manuel Paz said he had always confronted the criminals who waited on his bananas ripening, in order to steal them. "He invested in fertilizers and the thieves just waited in hope for the fruit to be ready. He sought support from the police many times, but they never caught anybody and the criminals are still operating," they lamented.
