Kees van den Bosch Freeland: high supply, low demand

Low prices iceberg lettuce, cauliflower and broccoli prices halved

The marketing for outdoor vegetable crops has adapted to the weather, but it is still not looking good in some places, "We're having a rough time with iceberg lettuce. The product that was left behind, due to the colder weather, is now being delivered; but now we have the problem of too much supply and not enough demand. We are really just waiting for the sunny weather. When the iceberg lettuce is being bought, it is going for 2.50 to 3 Euro. 2.50 to 3 Euro is really, really low," sighs Kees van den Bosch from Freeland in Emmen, The Netherlands.

"Cauliflower, and broccoli especially, are also not doing too well. Supply has increased considerably; prices are half of what they were two weeks ago. If we were to get temperatures above 25 degrees, the situation would look completely different. All in all, things are not running smoothly," continues Kees. But he does see some more positive things happening, "Leeks are selling well and the onion market is also doing well."
