construction starts in 2016

New agricultural business park in Sint-Katelijne-Waver

Mid-2008, the Flemish government came up with the plan to start a business park in the regional urban area of Antwerp. "The choice soon fell on Sint-Katelijne-Waver," says Karolien Heirman of POM Antwerpen. "In view of the importance of Sint-Katelijne-Waver to horticulture, and the proximity of the BelOrta auction, the decision was also made to only provide room on this regional business park to companies related to agriculture or horticulture. The new business park is directly adjacent to the existing business park of around 115 hectares. In this existing business park, there are also numerous other fresh produce companies in addition to the auction, such as Univeg, AartsenFruit, Van Dijk Foods, Dries Sebrechts Fruit and others."

Construction starts in
2016
Early 2016, construction on the terrain will start. "We aim to complete construction on the area the same year." Within Veiling Zuid, POM Antwerpen sells around 30 hectares. 5 hectares of this has already been sold to Veiling BelOrta. In addition a number of other companies have signed up. POM Antwerpen is currently looking with them to see what location would be most suitable for them.

Type of companies
Karolien continues: "In view of the specific intended use, only companies that operate within the agricultural industry are able to establish themselves in the business park. This could range from supplying and producing cattle feed or fertilizers, repairing agricultural machines, production of fries, ready-made meals, packaging vegetables, to logistics and distribution of all these kinds of products."

POM Antwerpen sees the future of this business park as a unique opportunity to give the agriculture, horticulture and food sector in Flanders an extra boost.
"In addition, within the business park we are going for sustainability and comfortable entrepreneurship. For instance, we went for safe cycle routes, sustainable green and water buffers, CO2 neutrality, but in future we will also continue to watch over the quality on the business park. Together with the companies, we are working on the park management side of things, and look how companies can enjoy scalability advantages by working together (for instance in terms of joint purchasing of energy or maintenance of green zones). That way, entrepreneurs can invest all their time in what their good at: doing business."

Proximity companies
"Anyone choosing for Veiling Zuid, will be a part of a cluster that will be occupied solely by agriculture and food related companies. For many businesses, this is a unique opportunity to be close to the companies they're already working together with. That immediate proximity will also work to save costs. In addition, the business park is excellently located. By way of the R6, there is a direct connection with the E19, which in turn provides access to the port of Antwerp and Brussels Airport."
