Italy: No competition for grapes with seeds

"We started harvesting table grapes on June 18th," explains Flora Giuliano (in the photo), owner of Sant'Ambrogio together with husband Francesco Ciavarella.

The season starts with the Black Magic and Vittoria varieties. The former is slightly late as, last year, "we started harvesting on June 13th."

Volumes so far are therefore still limited.

The company grows table grapes on 25 hectares in total but also works with other producers to supply all its destination markets.

"Volumes should be similar to 2014 and quality is excellent. The Vittoria variety presents a sugar content of 13-14° Brix with well-formed medium-big grapes. The same can be said for Black Magic, which has a sugar content of 12-13°."

In addition to Vittoria and Black Magic, Sant'Ambrogio also sells many other table grape varieties - Italia, Palieri, Red Globe, seedless varieties, Sugarone, Crimsom, and even Black Pearl, a new black variety which ripens in October.

"Expectations for this season are positive and in line with last year - the campaign will last from June to December with a good product."

Sant'Ambrogio grapes are shipped to the main Italian markets - Verona, Padua, Milan - but also abroad, to Germany, Poland and Central Europe in particular.

"At the moment, the only foreign countries that can compete with us are Spain and Greece, but only for what concerns seedless grapes, because the quality of our produce with seeds is just the best. Spain has already started to sell seedless grapes. Quality is good, though quantities may not be so abundant."
