Italy: New garlic season starting

The new garlic season in Spain is starting and the first quantities of 'white spring' have been arriving from Andalusia.

Francesco Delfanti, sales manager for Delfanti Trade s.r.l., explained that "the quality of the Spanish produce is excellent for both the white and pink varieties. The latter is very popular on the Brazilian market."

"Prices have increased by 50% with respect to the previous season and the traditional white and morado (red) varieties will be ready within the next ten days."

For what concerns the Castilla-La Mancha area, he says that "the new produce will be available in the next two weeks. Quality seems good though, due to the heavy rainfall over the past few days, some batches may pose some problems."

Delfanti remains optimistic as regards the Italian production. "The harvesting of early varieties started all over Italy and quality seems excellent so far. The first negotiations for green (fresh) garlic started a month ago and soon the dried product will also be ready."
