Mimmo Palumbo, left, with Agostino Marcellino, technical-sales manager for HM.Clause Italia.
"Sales trend and prices were good until May, then prices dropped due to the fact that produce became available all at the same moment. Thanks to the delay, there wasn't even competition from Senegal and Morocco, but it didn't help us."
"An unlucky season for what concerns sales, but positive quality-wise. We focused on traditional varieties and Rasi melons which, with late transplants in late February-early March, guaranteed excellent yields and quality."
Palumbo Più dedicates around 75 hectares to netted melons (25 owned by Palumbo Più and the rest by partner companies) and 20 hectares to Canary yellow melons. Everything is cultivated following integrated control standards.
"We will start with open-field Canary yellow melons in early July and will continue until mid-October. Thankfully the weather was good in April improving setting and consistency."
Palumbo Più ships its produce to domestic retailers but has also established its first contacts in Germany and the UK.
