German cherry season: good weather, rising demand

Cherry season in German runs from the beginning of June until mid-August. The first estimates are already in for the German wholesale markets. Roland Tolls of Großhändler Berger und Tolls reports on the Düsseldorfer Großmarkt: “There are currently beautiful cherries on the market. The first larger quantities are also coming in now. Due to the good and sunny weather the past few days, the fruits have been able to truly gain a nice color.”

Great demand
“The demand for cherries is good,” the wholesale trader explains. “Consumers are happy that cherries from German and European cultivation are finally available again. The imported goods from overseas are not at all bad, but are too expensive. For example, nobody buys cherries for 19 Euros per kilo.”

Roland Tolls reports that he currently has cover cultivated sweet cherries from Baden. “We currently have sweet cherries from Baden. The products are absolutely amazing! There is nothing wrong with them. The birds haven't been eating them and they are worm free. They are currently priced at 5.50 Euros per kilo.”

Covered cultivation trend
The wholesale trader sees a slight trend towards covered cultivation. “There are ever more cherries coming from sheltered cultivation. In the Lower Rhine region for example, there are a number of producers who have employed such nets to protect their cherry trees.”

Good quality from Europe
The imported goods from the rest of Europe are currently of very good quality as well, says Roland Tolls. “The product from France and Spain are currently very satisfying. Considering all this, I believe that we are having a good cherry season thus far."
