Spanish peaches, nectarines dominate German market

Spain is the country that exports the most peaches to Germany. This was revealed in the BLE market report for calendar week 24/25. In 2014, a total of 75,790 tons of peaches were exported to Germany from the Mediterranean country. Italy remains the second most important country with 26,041 tons.

While the quantity of Spanish peaches has increased over the past three years (2012: 53.843 t; 2013: 75.790 t), the export of Italian quotations is declining (2012: 46.651 t; 2013: 39.910 t).

France (2014: 2,861t), Greece (2014: 2,187t) and Chile (2014: 400t) follow in third, fourth and fifth place. Altogether, Germany imported around 108,089 tons of peaches. 889 tons came from third countries, whereas the remaining 107,200 tons came from European countries.

As show from the market report, in calendar week 24, especially the yellow and white-fleshed peaches and nectarines from Spain and Italy dominated the market. The average price of white-fleshed peaches was around 2,27 Euro per kilo. Yellow-flehsed peaches altogether had a larger market share. Quotations from Italy cost 2.11 Euro per kilo and the Spanish 2.17 Euro.

The yellow-flehsed dominated with nectarines as well. Spanish yellows, with a market share of 67.0 percent, cost 2.35 Euro per kilo, while Italian ones are traded for 2.38 Euro per kilo. The first Italian whites arrived on the market in calendar week 24. They are traded for 2.50 Euro per kilo, and the Spanish ones are traded for 2.84 Euro per kilo.

Altogether. the demand proceeded steadily, but within limits, and was thus handled without a problem. In some places, supply was so great that the accommodation facilities were lacking.

The quality left something to be desired on some wholesale markets. Degree of ripeness, condition and taste were not convincing. Partially, traders had to contend with cracked cores or fungi. Quotations from France, where the season will commence shortly, are expected on the wholesale markets.
