Italy: Tomato campaign starting at AOP Luce

Everything is ready for the tomato campaign at A.O.P. LUCE, the consortium established in March 2015 by the Giotto and La Flacca POs, which specialise in vegetables such as courgettes, aubergines, celery, salad and tomatoes.

The produce is cultivated in the plain between Fondi and Sperlonga (Latina), which has a special microclimate and a sandy soil rich in nutrients.

Giovanni Lamesi, producer, and Antonello Cantarella, La Flacca quality manager.

Thanks to the good weather in April and May, which favoured pollination without too much rain, produce has a good quality and high Brix levels.

Bunch tomatoes

"The 2014 tomato campaign was characterised by a lower quality because summer was rather humid and rainy. We are expecting a good campaign this year though, as quality is excellent, sugar content is above average and temperatures have been good so far. Production should be 15% more than 2014," explained APO Luche chairman Felice Petrillo.

Cherry tomatoes

The Luce Consortium complies with integrated control standards and holds the GlobalGAP certification. 90% of the produce is destined to retailers - of this, 20% is sent abroad (to Germany in particular) and 70% remains in Italy. The remaining 10% is destined to traditional retailers and the processing industry.
