Italy: Protected crop courgettes at Candiano

Although it is now focused on the melon, watermelon and mini-watermelon campaign, Candiano is already thinking about the next courgette season.

The company, established by Luigi Candiano, his brother Corrado and their children, has in fact already defined the 2015/16 season.

There will be two objectives - quality and quantity. There will be twelve sowings and seven transplants with three courgette types (dark, streaked and round) on 550 hectares of greenhouses, polytunnels and maxi polytunnels.

The company owns 400 hectares, then there are 50 hectares in Azienda agricola Peppone (established in cooperation with Agricola Don Camillo in Reggio Emilia) and another hundred owned by partners.

"Courgettes are our leading product together with melons (7,500 tons a year), watermelons and mini-watermelons (8,000 tons). We can now grow up to 15,000 tons from September until May, so we can even meet the increasing demand coming from abroad."

"The fact that we specialise in the cultivation, harvesting and packaging of a single product means we can provide a very high quality. The Candiano brand can therefore be associated with premium-quality courgettes."

Logistics is essential - 30% of deliveries is carried out by the company (mainly to Southern Italy), whereas the remaining 70% is carried out by shipping companies that deliver regularly all over Europe and mainly to Germany, Switzerland and France.
