Robot harvests broccoli, UK

A team of researchers in the UK from Lincoln University have developed a robot that can harvest broccoli. Professor Tom Duckett, Head of the project explains that the robot is a major innovation in the agricultural robotics sector. Broccoli fields are amongst the largest in the world and until now harvest has been manual, which means high production costs.

The robot was developed thanks to financing from over 70 English companies. It has a 3D camera allowing it to identify which broccoli are ready for harvest. The project is not yet finalised, but it is not far off. For the developers this is just a first step as the aim is to be able to use such a process for other crops.

The project has been developed alongside another project that aims to find tools to diagnose sick plants and offer an alternative to chemical pesticides in agriculture.
