US (CA): Green onion prices low

Supplies of green onions coming from Mexico have been plentiful for the last several weeks, and, as a result, prices have been low.

“Supplies are good, but the market is as bad as I've ever seen,” said Steve Timsak of Church Brothers. “Supplies on the West Coast are mainly coming from Mexico in the San Luis Valley and Mexicali.” On June 11, prices were between $5.50 and $8.55 for a carton of bunched 48s.

“Markets have been really poor for the last three weeks and they're going to stay that way until growers drop their numbers,” said Timsak. Prices were good in the fall and early spring, but they fell about six weeks ago when volumes increased. Summer plantings usually produce a smaller crop, but competition from Quebec and Ohio could prevent markets from improving significantly.

“There are a lot of shippers that kept packing when the market was good,” said Timsak. “Some growers made good money, but, hopefully, they don't put in extra acres next year or else supplies will exceed demand.”
