VBT partners with ANPE in Peru

In the coming years the Association of Belgian Horticultural Cooperatives (VBT) will be partnering up with ANPE (National Association of agro-producers), an umbrella organization made up ecological, family farmers in Peru. For the partnership VBT will work together with Trias; Trias works worldwide to encourage the exchange and cooperation between farmers and entrepreneurs. The partnership fits in the southern section of the new 'Responsibly Fresh' sustainable development project created by VBT and it's members. In early June a study trip took place in Peru in which VBT and ANPE, under the guidance of Trias, got to know each other's work and in which the foundation was laid for further development of the partnership.

The mission of Trias is to increase the livelihood and well-being of family farmers and small entrepreneurs through supporting their member organizations. In this context, Trias has supported ANPE since 2014 as a farmer organization for ecological, family farmers in Peru. ANPE unites, as a national association, 20 regional organizations with a total of 12,000 members. Their members are ecological, family growers that try to obtain a fair price for their products from an idea of cooperation and through the development of a quality approach.

From the cooperative idea and the holistic view of sustainable development, VBT decided to add a section in the south to the sustainability project, 'Responsibly Fresh'. As a cooperative sector, VBT and it's members assume their responsibility in sustainable development and it's precursor therein. In that context, Trias suggested a collaboration between VBT and a farmers organization in the south. Given the similarities between them, VBT is starting a partnership with ANPE in Peru. VBT President Rita DemarĂ©: "Growers in the South often produce in difficult circumstances in which they often do not receive a fair price for their products. I find that it is usually through the creation and development of cooperatives that our colleagues in the South are supported and guided, this way we can avoid too much of the pie landing with others in the supply chain."

Two themes were specifically identified for the partnership; the development of a quality label and marketing products from ANPE members at the national and regional level. In early June a delegation from VBT made a trip to Peru, accompanied by Trias. They met directors and members of the national ANPE organization in Lima and a regional ANPE organization in Huánuco. The organizations exchanged their experiences of the organization of producers and the marketing of products. VBT put the importance on cooperation between producers' cooperatives during the 'National meeting of ecological producers of Peru', which was organized by ANPE from June 1-3, 2015 in Lima, Peru. VBT and ANPE decided that they will continue exchanging knowledge and information in the future around the proposed topics. VBT and it's members will thereby share their expertise in different areas with ANPE. Also, possible expert knowledge around specific action points will be set up.
