BLE market newsletter week 23/15

Spanish peaches, nectarines dominate market - cucumbers prices fluctuate

Peaches and nectarines
Spain dominates the market. Supply rose sharply and significantly exceeded the demand. As a result the prices went down. In Frankfurt, the prices rose again a little on Thursday due to a large order. The Italian produce came second. Their supply increased noticeably. However the prices did not change as much as the Spanish competition. The prices of the peach variety Paraguayos hardly changed.

Cucumbers
The cucumbers mainly originated from Germany and the supply rose slightly. Dutch and Belgian cucumbers completed the supply as usual. Since it corresponds with the needs, the prices initially remained stable. The significant weather improvement mid-week intensified the turnover. This gave opportunities to raise the prices. However in Berlin the availability increased in such a way that price cuts could hardly be prevented. Mini cucumbers came from Germany and the Netherlands. In the beginning their commercial value was low, but thanks to an increased interest their value rose.

Leeks
At the Frankfurt wholesale market leeks from Germany and Belgium sold out and barely received new supplies. Fresh leeks reached a price of 15 Euro per 10 kg and together with sporadic supplies from Spain and Morocco sold for 10 to 15 Euro per 10 kg.

Apples
Apples imported from overseas dominated the market. Because of the balanced demand – supply relationship the prices did not change significantly.

Pears
Since the limited supply and the sales were on equal footing with each other the prices barely changed.

Table grapes
The season in Chile and South African is coming to an end, and the quality of the grapes sometimes was not consistent.

Strawberries
While the presence of German fruit increased significantly the Italian strawberries are barely available. At some places Dutch strawberries were available.

Apricots
The supply continuously rose and was large enough to meet the demand without any problems. Sometimes there was even a surplus so that complete sales did not succeed.

Cherries
The availability of cherries increased rapidly. And since the demand could not keep up, prices went down slightly. A slight surplus could not be avoided.

Kiwis
New Zealand Kiwis dominated the market. With steady sales the prices were rarely modified.

Lemons
The market continued to be affected by the exclusivity of the Spanish import. Due to the small supply, prices remained high.

Bananas
The sales were calm but steady. The supply and demand were in balance.

Cauliflower
The trade was mainly characterized by the availability of German cauliflower. The prices mostly remained stable but sometimes the prices went upwards.

Lettuce
German and Dutch iceberg lettuce reached the market. The demand increased due to the high quality but due to the large supply prices still had to be reduced.

Tomatoes
Central European tomatoes flooded the market. The Dutch and Belgian tomatoes were the most popular. Initially the cool weather slowed the sales down.

Sweet peppers
Predominantly the supply of red and yellow sweet pepper varieties from the Netherlands increased and dominated the market.

Asparagus
Interest went down gradually so there were barely any price adjustments. And due to the reduced supply the higher demand increased at a later stage.

Onions
The popular Spanish onions were continuously in low supply and it was not enough to satisfy the demand.
