US (GA): Quality cucumbers command good prices

With harvesting of cucumbers in Florida finished, supplies in the eastern part of the United States are coming out of Georgia. Volumes have been light, so prices for premium product are strong.

“Prices for cucumbers right now are fairly high for top grade product like super select,” said Michael Yates of Pexco Produce Sales. “Those are the retail packs that chain stores want to buy.” He's seen prices upwards of $20.00 for a carton of those, though prices for lower-grade cucumbers have been lower.

“The selects, which are used in food service, are cheap,” said Yates. Prices for the lower grade are more in the range of $5.00 to $6.00 per carton.

“Florida ended about a week to 10 days earlier than usual because of the heat,” said Yates. “The reason for current prices is a lack of supplies. There are plenty of cucumbers, but plants are producing many of the premium cucumbers.”
