Leon van Meir

Onion market quieter this week

Last week a great deal of onions went out, but this week is a lot quieter, says Leon van Meir from 'Van Meir Uien' (Van Meir Onions), an onion wholesale company located in Steenbergen. Van Meir is not worried about the quiet week. "The devil is right behind him, but it can go either way. Ramadan is coming, and with that usually comes the necessary demand from Africa."

"There are still onions available, but due to the late spring the onion sets are not here yet, so we are on our toes. Everyone is looking at each other. We are hearing that growers are getting 25 cents, but I have my doubts whether that price is actually being realized; there are not that many transactions right now," continues Leon. On average the quality is not bad for the traders. "There are some sets ready to go, but they often find their way to Poland, because the prices for the industry market are pretty good. Good Dutch red onions are only sporadically available. This market is taking over Egypt more and more."
