US (CA): Kale plentiful, prices remain low

With kale coming out of several regions, supplies are such that the market remains cool. With no signs that supplies will dip in the coming weeks, prices are expected to remain at their current levels in the near future.

“There's plenty of kale coming from the Salinas Valley, and there's also some coming out of Georgia and South Carolina,” said Scott Niizawa of Growers Express. “With a lot of kale coming out, the market is pretty depressed right now.” On May 28, prices for a carton of bunched 24s were between $8.35 and $11.25 out of the Central Coast. Out of Oxnard, prices for a carton of bunched 24s were between $7.75 and $7.95.

“You have a lot of other regions that are planting a little heavier this year,” said Niizawa. “There are a lot of local deals starting up around the country, so it's just a situation where there is a lot of kale. I anticipate these prices will stick around for a while, hopefully not for the whole summer. But the market has been this way for the past three months or so, and it will probably continue this way for at least another month.”
