Switzerland: Tomato consumption doubled

Last year an average of 7.82 kilo of tomatoes per person were eaten in Switzerland. This means tomatoes take the second place in the vegetable “hit parade”. And in addition, a further 2,64 kilo of cherry tomatoes were consumed per person, so cherry tomatoes also make it into the top ten too, and reach the ninth place.

Especially the small and extremely tasty cherry tomatoes experience a real increase in consumption in Switzerland. In several years the consumption has more than doubled, and the production in Switzerland increased from 2,600 to 8,800 metric tons. Nowadays most of the tomatoes are grown in greenhouses, the cultivation of tomatoes outdoor is low.
