BLE market report KW 20/15

Imported apples increase in popularity and first Gold Kiwi on the market

Apples
European apples are still one step ahead but imported apples from overseas appear to slowly take the lead. New on offer is the Braeburn apple from New Zealand, which were traded quite quickly. New Zealand also had a place on the market with Royal Gala, Cox Orange and Jazz. From Chile came, among others, Royal Gala, Elstar and Granny Smith and the first Red Chief apples. Although the quality of the fruit from the southern hemisphere was fine, the European apples were still at the centre of trade. Germany took centre stage with Elstar, Jonagold and Braeburn apples. Italy mainly contributed with Golden Delicious and Braeburn apples. It was possible to meet the continuous demand without difficulty. The first defects in quality, particularly in domestic products, caused very slight price decreases. But on the whole prices remained constant.

Pears
Freshness, ripeness and quality left nothing to be desired. Only the demand could be a bit higher. Nevertheless, the prices remained at the same level.

Table grapes
The supply of mainly Chilean and South African grapes and even Indian grapes decreased. And the quality of the goods is not always convincing.

Strawberries
The German strawberries got first place in appearance. The supply of German strawberries grew sharply and exceeded the interest.

Kiwis
New Zealand is the largest supplier. Besides 40 pieces packaging there are now 48er-packaging too. The first Golden Kiwi got enough attention in Munich. The demand was quite all right, but due to supply the prices had to be lowered. The European range, particularly from Italy, was sent to France, Greece and the Netherlands. The prices did not change significantly when the supply was matched to the demands.

Lemons
Spanish Primofiori lemon clearly lost out in the market; new harvest of Verna lemons controlled the market. And as a result of the reduced availability the prices climbed upwards.

Bananas
Based on the availability of continuous storage facilities there were no significant changes with respect to the prices.

Cauliflower
The quality of the amount of local cauliflowers on offer had increased significantly compared to last week. Taking advantage of this quality, some retailers didn’t change the price.

Salad
Lettuce came from Germany and Belgium. The interest decreased and matched the supply.

Cucumbers
The offer consisted of German, Dutch and Belgian supply. The demand had improved a little; and thus could be fulfilled adequately.

Tomatoes
Dutch and Belgian tomatoes dominate the market. Since the supply was usually based on the demand, the prices did not change significantly.

Peppers
Dutch peppers dominated the market. The prices were subject to constant change; especially the prices of yellow and green peppers changed almost daily.

Onions
Onions from New Zealand dominated the market. The supply was sufficient to satisfy the demand. Prices changed only marginally.

Asparagus
German asparagus dominated the market with a large margin. The suitable weather caused significant amounts of asparagus to be put on the market; and selling the stored harvest completely failed.
