Greece: Fructa Union looks at gaps in market

While based in Greece, Fructa Union imports most of their products from abroad and ships the majority of these to Balkans and Europe. Their job, as explained by Fructa Union's owner, Evangelos Nenopoulos, is to find what's missing in the market and quickly supply it.

“Our purpose is to quickly ship quality products,” said Nenopoulos. “The saying goes that if you don't sell your products quickly, then your products will sell you.”

Though based in Greece, over 80 percent of the fresh produce Fructa Union sources come from places like Argentina, South Africa, Chile, Holland, China, Italy, Spain and Belgium. The company started supplying fresh fruits & vegetables to American and European armies stationed in Kosovo, so they have extensive experience working with Balkan markets.

“We have about 300 items right now and we sell to wholesalers, retailers and supermarkets in Yugoslavia, Albania, FYROM (Macedonia), Romania, Bulgaria and the European Union,” said Nenopoulos. “We have about 2,000 customers, which we supply with quality products in those countries.” As an importer and broker, Nenopoulos sees his job as a fast-paced exercise in finding what will sell and selling it quickly. Last year, he cited the situation with lemons in Argentina, as an example of what he has to deal with.

Over the previous years, he was dealing with low quantities of lemons, but last season, due to big shortage and high demand, he rocketed to enormous quantities and dominated completely over the Greek & Balkans market (7-8 countries in total).

“Our target is to find what's missing from the market and fill it,” said Nenopoulos. “Today, one thing will be difficult, and another day it will be something else. So you have to be in a hurry, our job must be done quickly, and we mustn't sleep.”
