"Companies in Greece can't invest in new machines right now"

Matsalas designs, builds and sells machines for vegetables and fruit. For twenty years they've been working together with Greefa. Together they build complete product lines. The company in Greece was founded in 1982 by Christos Matsalas and is situated in the Veria area. Veria is one of the largest production areas of vegetables and fruit in Greece. In 1995 they connected with Greefa, a Dutch company specialized in the development and production of high tech sorting and packing machines for fruit. Matsalas is the exclusive distributor of Greefa machines in Greece and Cyprus.

A new cherry line

"The fact that Greece produces a lot of fruit and vegetables is a large benefit", tells Antonis Margaritopoulos, Matsalas' sales manager. "We regularly introduce new machines. Our newest cherry sorting machine has a unique feature; the cherries remain under water during transport on the lane." Matsalas agrees that it is important to keep developing new features. "We pay attention to the demands of our customers and together with Greefa we regularly introduce new machines."

The most important buyers of Matsalas are apple producers. Although we supply machines for all types of fruits. Most fruit is damaged easily and our machines are made to consider that. We mostly supply Greece, but we recently started to export machines to Romania and Bulgaria. The crisis in our country caused us to prepare for the future by looking to other export opportunities. Farmers in Greece are searching for second-hand machines principally and are less prepared to invest in new machines. We hope things get better for all."
