The banana is the most consumed fruit by the Argentines, as the country has a per capita consumption of over 12 kilos per year. This in turn means the country requires making a large number of imports. The fall in fruit imports from Brazil, 2% in April, mainly respond to a decline in purchases. This, however, doesn't mean its bad business to buy fruits from abroad and sell them in the country; what seems to have happened is that the trickle of dollars for imports has also reached this primary and perishable foods sector.
According to information recorded by Infocampo.com, Paraguay has asked Argentina to unlock the importation of bananas. Paraguay's Ministry of Economic Affairs asked Argentina's ambassador, Ana Maria Corradi Beltran, to make efforts so that Paraguay can export bananas to her country.
Ambassador Rigoberto Gauto, Vice Minister of Economic Relations and Integration of Paraguay, met with Beltran Corradi to discuss issues on the bilateral agenda on economic matters. During the meeting, Gauto gave Argentina's ambassador an update of the list of Paraguayan fruits and vegetables for which an Advance Import Affidavits (DJAI) authorization has been pending for several months.
Gauto requested that the provision of these import permits be done faster, and expressed concern because they are perishable and seasonal products, produced by small producers from Tembiaporá and GuayaibĂ.
