Ecuador to benefit from drop in Costa Rican pineapple production
"The winter, which was marked by abundant rainfall, has been left behind and we are now entering a very good time as regards the climate conditions, and from week 26 onwards we will have more fruit," explains Ana Lizette Avilés Simpson, of the company Agroeden.
The company, which produces and exports exclusively MD2 pineapples, is based in Santo Domingo, Ecuador, and harvests pineapples of all sizes on its 650 hectares of plantations all year round.
Since the start of the year, they stress that demand has increased and that it is expected to continue growing in the coming weeks due to Costa Rica's drop in production.
Prospects in 2015 are very positive for Agroeden's pineapples, but sources from the company stated that the safeguards implemented by the national Government could result in retaliation from other countries in the region.
"Chile is a very important market for our pineapples and these safeguards adversely affect the import of the fruit in Ecuador; the Chilean Government has not yet taken action against the Ecuadorian fruit, but this is something that could happen," concludes Ana Lizette.
