"Adriaan van Belzen: "More and more the grower is the one deciding the price in Europe"

Daily Onions start importing Egyptian red onions

In week 21 the first Egyptian onions will arrive at Daily Onions, "The quality of Dutch onions has given us a reason to start a week later than last season. This year I expect the quality of the red onions from Egypt to be perfect. The import of Egyptian yellow onions is not an issue because they are not marketable within Western Europe due to their flat shape," says Adriaan van Belzen. "Starting in June I expect stable demand, but the season is only eight weeks long, so before you know it, you're back with the Dutch red onions. It is remarkable that England and Scandinavia still have enough red onions available."

Daily Onions has been active in European markets for three years, "We closely cooperate with good suppliers, which allows us to act as the reliable link between buyer and supplier. The personal contact we have with both sides allows for mutual information to be shared and is appreciated more and more by all parties involved. Due to the oversupply of information from the market and social media it is a mystery which way the market will go, but market developments are passed on to customers on a daily basis," says Adriaan.

"The season is almost over, and still no one can tell how the season will end. I believe this is typical for current market developments; we are inundated with new information via forums, export numbers and tweets, but we know less and less. The interests of various parties in the onion sector no longer follow a logical path that's easy to guess due to the overcapacity of sorters and traders, as a result I see that last season the owner of the product (ie the grower) determines the price. Within Europe demand for onions has gone down since last season, which suggests that there are more onions available within Europe," says Adriaan.
