Italy: Pear export season over, domestic consumption good

Exports of Abate pears ended in late April. Sales were livelier and volumes were lower than the past season despite the abundant supply at the beginning, especially for what concerns the Abate variety.

The latest data was collected on April 15th and concerns the situation in Emilia-Romagna warehouses. At the moment, there are only a few stocks of Abate and Conference - around 5,000 tons of the former (-32% with respect to last year) and 7-8,000 tons of the latter (-53%).

In the past few weeks, the demand for medium-small grades increased thanks to a decrease in competition from Belgium and the Netherlands. This year, competition was made worse by the Russian ban. Recently, the French market showed an improvement and prices increased a little.

Bigger grades went much better, with limited volumes destined abroad as a lot of produce was destined to the domestic market.

The big quantities available from the start of the campaign enabled the selection of the produce leading to an increase in prices, although they still remained lower than the last two campaigns.

For what concerns domestic consumption, between October and February 2015 consumers bought around 176,000 tons - +14% with respect to last year. This is quite positive, as in the last few years demand was rather low.
