July 31 decision on EU sanctions Russia

European government leaders will ultimately take another decision on how to proceed with the sanction measures against Russia on July 31, 2015. Through www.handelmetrusland.nl, EVO keeps an eye on all developments regarding the sanctions. In July 2014, the EU government leaders decided to establish economic sanctions against Russia and Crimea. These sanctions were a consequence of the Russian annexation of Crimea and the downing of flight MH17. The announced sanctions entered into force on July 31, 2014. The EU council decision in which the sanctions were announced, applies until July 31, 2015. No end date was established in advance.

In January of this year, the Russian minister of foreign affairs still said he expected the trade restrictions between the EU and Russia to be lifted soon. Also in January of this year, the US did decide to relax the sanction against Crimea, but indicated in March that the sanctions against Russia would be extended by at least another year. The EU hasn't said much yet about their plans for the sanctions.
