Easyfruit project extends fruit life

In Spain, a team of companies and research centres have carried out the Easyfruit project, which consists of development of an innovative active packaging that extends the life of peeled and cut oranges and pineapples to 9 and 12 days, respectively.

The package extends the life of peeled and cut oranges and pineapples.

A consortium coordinated by Itene, and formed by Centros Comerciales Carrefour, Spektar, Omniform, Rural Cooperative San Vicente Ferrer of Benaguasil, Slice Fruit, and Nofima, carried out the project. According to Martha Lara, project coordinator of Itene, "this innovative package works by releasing some substances that come in contact with the fresh fruit extending their life. In this case, this packaging extends the orange's life from 7 days, in their traditional packaging, to 9 days; and the pineapple's life to 12 days."

The Easyfruit project can help increase fruit consumption in society. In addition, companies can open new markets and reduce their losses from damaged fruit. From an environmental perspective, the project also reduces food waste.

According to Mariano Rodriguez, director of Quality and Sustainable Development of Carrefour, "this new packaging will help us reduce storage losses and will help consumers decrease their waste at home."
