Chile replacing European market with Middle East for apples

According to estimates by iQonsulting, Chilean apple exports to the European Union through week thirteen decreased by 42% when compared to 2014.

In 2009, states the report, 43% of Chilean exports were directed to Europe; currently only 19% of total exports of Chilean apples are sent to Europe.

However, Chilean apple exports to the Middle East have increased by more than 20% so, for the first time, they surpassed Europe, just as Latin America did in the 2011-2012 season.

Chilean producers stated that, "the quality of the fruit harvested during this season has been better in terms of calibre and the quality of the fruit sent to cold storage facilities has been greater than in previous seasons."

According to iQonsulting, the variation is mainly related to "the complex situation in the Old Continent due to the increased production of the suppliers of the northern hemisphere, and the Russian veto on the European Union which has lead to an oversupply."

However, the gradual downward trend in apple shipments destined to the European market has been felt since the 2007-2008 season, when the volume of Chilean apple shipments fell by 12%, going from 813,113 tons to 710,236 tons.
