25 percent increase compared to last year

US: Record avocado shipment for Cinco de Mayo

“During the last few weeks leading up to Cinco de Mayo, the avocado industry shipped about 45 million pounds of avocados per week,” says Rob Wedin with Calavo Growers. “This is a 25 percent increase compared to last year.” Cinco de Mayo comes at a time when both California and Mexico can ship heavy volumes. Both regions have good supplies and are shipping significantly more volume than one year ago. “This year, smaller sizes are more plentiful than large sizes and as a result, the prices of large avocados are strong while you can find some real bargains for small-sized fruit,” said Wedin.

Cinco de Mayo might be biggest industry event
“We are seeing a surge in popularity of avocado related food events in spring,” mentioned Wedin. “Cinco de Mayo, the Super Bowl and July 4 are the biggest avocado events in the country and they continue to battle for the number 1 ranking. They are very close and this year, we might give the award to Cinco. It has been very good.”

Consumer demand still going up
In addition to these large events, healthy, fresh and delicious avocados are finding increased menu diversity. “Their popularity has also accelerated in new regions of the market, especially in the East. Altogether, consumer demand is about 15 percent higher than last year,” finished Wedin.
