Coop sells crooked (German) asparagus

“Ünique fruit and vegetables are very well received with our customers”, Axel Dippold, responsible for fruit and vegetables at Coop, is cited in a media message. Under Ünique, Coop firstly sells fresh asparagus which deviate from the norm because of either a curve or a slightly opened tip. Small stones in the soil could be the cause for asparagus curving during washing. However, these optical flaws do not diminish the flavor.
Sale in 50 departments
The curved asparagus are now sold in around 50 Coop supermarkets. The promotion will last until the end of the season (expected around mid- to end of June). They cost 7.50 Franks per kilo. “For comparison: Coop currently has normal asparagus from Baden on special offer for 8.90 per 750g. The Swiss asparagus costs 9.80 per 500g”, thus says Coop in the Communiqué.
The asparagus come from Germany
Currently, the Ünique asparagus come mainly from the Baden area (Germany), though in the coming weeks the range is increased by Swiss asparagus.
The Unique-assortment currently includes potatoes, pickles, lemons, oranges, kiwis, red peppers and asparagus. The offer varies according to the season.
