Spar Austria bets on crispy-fresh radishes and young onions from Tyrol

After the long winter months, people can look forward to the first kinds of domestic vegetables. The red-glowing radishes and fresh young onions from Tyrol appear to be bursting with vitamins. In the last 8 to 12 weeks, they have been grown on the fields of Biachlhof in Thaur, and they perfectly complement the healthy kitchen.

The fruit and vegetable shelves at SPAR, EUROSPAR and INTERSPAR are filled with Tyrolean products all year round: while in the winter months there are mostly apples, white cabbage, red cabbage, Chinese cabbage, as well as many domestic herbs, since April it is the new harvest, which attracts vegetable enthusiasts in swarms. Especially the red glowing radishes – crispy and fresh – as well as young onions absolutely count as heralds of spring.

SPAR bets on domestic suppliers
“Aus Tirol und für Tirol (from Tyrol and for Tyrol) – with fruit and vegetables, SPAR is rooted in the homeland in the truest sense of the word”, emphasizes Dr. Christof Rissbacher, managing director of SPAR Wörgl. “We are a dependable partner of the local agriculture and are helping to keep the value with us in Tyrol, and to obtain and secure workplaces. Furthermore, the short distances are a valuable contribution to climate protection.

From field to shelf in 24 hours
In spring, the radishes easily need eight weeks before they are ripe for the harvest, the young onions around twelve weeks. While still on the fields of Biachlhof, they are bundled, washed and shipped. From field to SPAR only takes the spring vegetables a maximum of 24 hours. “Local seasonal products form Tyrol can not be surpassed”, Anton Giner jun. confirms. “All ingredients are completely preserved on the short transportation routes.” Throughout the year, six hectares of radishes are being cultivated on the Biachlhof.

A successful collaboration
The Giner family is connected to SPAR in a long, successful collaboration which is ideal for both sides. “The Biachlhof has a fixed customer for its harvest and can produce based on its needs. SPAR Tyrol in turn has a dependable supplier, for which maximum quality and freshness are most important”, Dr. Christoff Rissbacher emphasizes. Besides radishes and young onions, the vegetable company from Thaur also provides the SPAR markets with several kinds of lettuce, pumpkins and celery.
Since three years ago, they have begun with the conversion to humus cultivation in Biachlhof.
