US (CA): Artichoke prices remain strong

Lower than usual supplies continue to prop up higher than normal prices for California artichokes. With volumes this season expected to continue as they have so far, prices could stay at these levels for the foreseeable future.

“Prices are good, and they have been for a little over a month,” said Bob Montgomery of Beachside Produce. “I don't see a change or a big let up in the supply side of the equation, so I expect those prices to continue.” On May 1, prices for a carton of Globe 12s were between $25.50 and $28.75 out of California's Central District. Prices for a carton of 18s were between $29.85 and $36.75, and a carton of 24s ranged in price from $32.85 to $36.75.

“Demand is good all over,” said Montgomery. “Artichokes have grown in popularity, that's why we're seeing such good demand, and, right now, there's not enough supply to fill that demand.” He pointed to a couple of big issues that made for less production this year. Between water shortages and trouble finding labor to harvest artichokes, he's seen yields per acre fall.
