BLE market report 17/15

New potato sales are picking up speed

The new potato trade at the German wholesale markets slowly starts to pick up speed. This is evident from the newsletter KW 17/15 from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food (BLE). Imported new potatoes from Italy increased the available range of new potatoes, which in previous weeks was still quite small. The new potatoes from Cyprus and Morocco increased too. New in the assortment of Frankfurt Wholesalers was Annabelle, a new potato from Israel.

Asparagus demand influence potato sales
The spring-like weather of the last week has increased customer interest. The combination of potatoes with fresh asparagus received a good response from customers and led to increased sales. The demand for the varieties Galatiner Sieglinde and Annabelle, from Italy and Cyprus respectively, was constant and strong. With an extra supply from Morocco and Cyprus the available new potatoes were kept at the current level. Nevertheless, traders were forced to accept some concessions in price.

German new potatoes of good quality

There were enough Italian new potatoes to exceed demand. Here the sellers had to accept concessions in price. German new potatoes of good quality were also widely available and took advantage of the increased asparagus sales. Although the German new potatoes were widely available there were no major price changes.
