Pepper volume up by 32%
Hoogstraten gives more than half auction fees back to growers
Veiling Hoogstraten gives back more than half of the auction costs to its producers. On Tuesday, 28 April, Veiling Hoogstraten closed the year 2014 with the statutory annual meeting, where truly successful figures were reported. Horticultural product sales increased by € 18 million, amounting to € 192 million. The total turnover increased to € 245 million; € 25 million more than in 2013. Such figures were possible thanks to sharp increases in the supply of the main products: strawberries, tomatoes and peppers. In terms of volume, peppers registered a spectacular 32% growth.
Strawberries and tomatoes reached quite reasonable prices in 2014, especially in the autumn period. During much of the year, with the exception of May and part of June, peppers registered rather low prices.
Overall, 2014 will go down in history as a bad year for horticulture, with the psychological blow of the Russian boycott especially contributing to the feeling. The operating profit of Veiling Hoogstraten is therefore all the more remarkable and rather atypical for the industry.
Profit
The annual accounts closed with a profit of € 554,000. Before determining this result, a reduction was made in the form of a cooperative return of 1.22%, or € 1.908 million to the member-shareholders. This means that 52% of the auction fees have been paid back to its members.
The results of recent years and the austere financial policies created room for new projects. Last winter, the participants in the project 'central sorting peppers' renewed their contract for 5 years, which opens the possibility of considerable investments being made in the project. Also, within six weeks, the auctioneer will start the construction of a new packing warehouse of about 5,000 sqm, which is intended to be in operation by the end of the year.
