France: consumers advised to choose French asparagus

France is in full asparagus season, and it will continue until the end of June. But it is advised to check the label before buying asparagus and check that it is French. If the asparagus is brought in a bundle from the market or from a good greengrocer, there should be no problem, the asparagus will be from one of the French production regions (mainly the South East, South West and Val de Loire).

France produces about 17,000 tons of asparagus, enough to cover national consumption which reaches 0.4kg per capita/per year on average. But France is obviously not the only producer : competition comes from Germany, Spain, Italy, and even Greece. These countries are often where the well calibrated bundles of asparagus sold in supermarkets come from. But this asparagus has travelled, been stocked in cold rooms and is obviously less good and has less vitamins than French asparagus. And it is not necessarily cheaper !
