Mucci Farms looks to stand out

With a lot of Canada's greenhouse growers focusing on the traditionally big greenhouse items, Mucci Farms is looking to go beyond the cucumber, pepper and tomato mainstays. To do that, they're appealing to consumers with foodie tendencies.

“You have to differentiate yourself each year,” said Stephen Cowan of Mucci Farms. “So we're getting into organics, biodegradable packaging, re-sealable packages, using less plastic, strawberries, hydroponic herbs/lettuces and hot peppers.” Those last two are meant to appeal to consumers who are into new trends.

“We started with hydroponic berries last year, and if it goes well, we could expand into other products,” said Cowan. “There’s no pesticide residues and the product looks amazing. It is more expensive, but you get better quality for the price.” The berries also carry the Foodland Ontario logo, which signify the product has been grown locally. Continuing with the local theme, Mucci Farms will begin a trial greenhouse right in their backyard next to their corporate office that will yield lettuce and herbs – two items Cowan believes put Mucci at the forefront of an emerging health trend.

“For a while, the focus was on blueberries and kale as superfoods, and now people are realizing that lettuce and herbs are also superfoods,” said Cowan. “People are always looking for something that is healthy, so it's something we're getting more into.” Mucci Farms' hot peppers are also taking off, and Cowan thinks that makes sense, given the tastes of consumers today.

“The new thing is not only eating healthy, but it's about putting a little flavor and spice in your food,” said Cowan. “It's something different. Consumers think a little bit of hot is good, and we're picking up on that trend as well with our Hotshots, Mixed Hot Peppers… “IT’S FLAVOR ON FIRE”
